Teams with Sonic

SONIC/TAILS

The very first team you can play with, so it makes for a very well-rounded combination that can be used in every level. There is really not much to say, this is basically the jack-of-all-trades of the game.

    Moveset

  • Spin
  • Spin Jump
  • Spin Dash
  • Skid
  • Trick Actions
  • Tails' Tag Actions

    Pros

  • This team is a Speed team, which mean it has higher momentum and can go into Boost mode.
  • Sonic has his standard move-set.
  • Tails’ Tag Actions allow you to fly or get launched into the air.
  • This is one of the four teams that can perform Trick Actions. Sonic’s lateral Trick Action goes the farthest and can damage enemies, and he can damage enemies below with his downward Trick Action/Bound Attack.

    Cons

  • Sonic’s move-set is limited compared to other combinations.
  • He has the worst aerial Trick Action.

Why use it?: if you just want to play as normal Sonic and at the same time benefit from Trick Actions and Tails’ Tag Actions. It’s a good Speed team that can fly, it doesn’t stand out but it’s designed to be used everywhere.

SONIC/KNUCKLES

Sonic gets more combat-oriented without sacrificing his speed. The Insta-Shield, and the fact that Knuckles is the one that gives it to you, is a cool callback to S3&K.

    Moveset

  • Spin
  • Spin Jump
  • Spin Dash
  • Fire Sliding
  • Upper Spin
  • Bound Attack
  • Insta-Shield (Wind Attack)
  • Knuckles' Tag Actions

    Pros

  • This team is a Speed team, which mean it has higher momentum and can go into Boost mode.
  • Sonic can perform an Insta-Shield (here called a Wind Attack), an Upper Spin (dash upwards) and a Bound Attack (bounce on the ground), to attack in every direction.
  • His normal skid is replaced by the Fire Sliding, which is stronger and lasts longer (about 1.5 seconds). It’s so strong that you can go up steep inclines and curved walls.
  • Sonic can perform an Insta-Shield (here called a Wind Attack), an Upper Spin (dash upwards) and a Bound Attack (bounce on the ground), to attack in every direction.
  • You can destroy Power barriers.
  • You can use Knuckles’ gliding to cover ground if you’re careful.

    Cons

  • Sonic’s Upper Spin has a short-ish range and it’s difficult to move horizontally, making it a limited type of double jump.
  • The lack of strong aerial moves makes this the slowest, least flexible Speed team.
  • The Fire Sliding sends you very far and there’s the risk you’ll fall down a ledge, and it can’t be canceled.
  • Knuckles’ Tag Actions are more circumstantial than others.

Why use it?: if you want to combine Sonic’s speed and move-set with a more aggressive gameplay style, or you want a Speed team with a Power attack and many melee moves. In levels, the main draws compared to K/S are the gliding and especially the Upper Spin, which gives it the tiniest of aerial advantages and can be used for small but cool skips. This team is pretty good for the Altar Emerald boss in particular, as its hitbox is high and can be more easily reached with the Upper Spin.

SONIC/CREAM

My absolute favorite combination, and a great game breaker - Sonic gains all sorts of nifty abilities without sacrificing anything of his own, and exploits Cream’s momentum-amplifying abilities to terrific effects. This is probably the fastest Sonic can go in this game.

    Moveset

  • Spin
  • Spin Jump
  • Spin Dash
  • Skid
  • Jump Dash/Homing Attack
  • Cream's Tag Actions
  • (bonus: can breathe underwater)

    Pros

  • This team is a Speed team, which mean it has higher momentum and can go into Boost mode.
  • Sonic has a strong Jump Dash that can function as a little boost.
  • He can home on enemies.
  • He can breathe underwater.
  • You can destroy Power barriers.
  • Cream’s Tag Actions let you use Cheese and if performed in the air it gives you a handy double jump, or even flings you high, while keeping you curled. This also works on springs, even the chargeable ones.

    Cons

  • Cream’s air boost isn’t as powerful as Tails’ or Amy’s Tag Actions.

Why use it?: between the Jump Dash, the Homing Attack, the double jump, Cheese, and the ability to breathe underwater, this team is a great combination of speed and verticality.

SONIC/AMY

Once you get used to Sonic’s new jump, this is another well rounded team, as it combines Sonic’s speed with Amy’s aerial mobility. This team also looks very cute, with Amy looking totally lovestruck and Sonic grinding on rails with a snowboard. A bit of a treat for Sonamy fans.

    Moveset

  • Spin
  • Jump
  • Spin Attack
  • Spin Dash
  • Hammer Attack
  • Amy's Tag Actions

    Pros

  • This team is a Speed team, which mean it has higher momentum and can go into Boost mode.
  • Amy’s Tag Actions give you a great aerial boost.
  • Hitting springs with the hammer flings you very high into the air.
  • Unlike other teams with Amy as the partner, here she can spin, giving you extra help with enemies and bosses.

    Cons

  • Sonic jumps without spinning: to spin you have to press the attack button.
  • The Hammer Attack is slightly slower than the Skid and doesn’t have as much range, although at least you don’t put yourself in danger.
  • Sonic’s move-set is limited compared to other combinations, especially others with Amy as the partner.

Why use it?: if you want to combine Sonic’s speed and Amy’s hammer and Tag Actions. It’s a slightly more challenging version of S/T, one that trades off flight and Trick Actions for the Hammer and the ability to chain Tag Actions – very good for stages with more springs, like Route 99 Act 2 or Chaos Angel.
